Replace it when
Health is below 80% and the runtime no longer covers your real day, macOS says "Service Recommended", the Mac shuts down unexpectedly, or the battery is swelling (that one is urgent). On a Mac you plan to keep 2+ more years, a $159 to $249 service is the cheapest performance upgrade you can buy.
Wait when
Health is above 80% and the runtime still works for you. Capacity numbers alone aren't a reason to spend money: a battery at 83% with gentle habits can hold that level for a surprisingly long time.
Do the value math
A $159 battery in a MacBook Air worth $700 that serves you well is excellent value. A $249 top-case service on a 9-year-old Intel Pro worth $300 is not, put it toward the next Mac instead. Rule of thumb: replace when the service costs less than a third of what the working Mac is worth to you.

How much does Apple charge to replace a MacBook battery?
In the US (out of warranty, as of 2026): $159 for 13-inch MacBook Air models, around $199 for the 15-inch Air, and a flat $249 for every MacBook Pro from 2016 onward, including all Apple Silicon models.
